Soggy Dollar Bar.
The Soggy Dollar Bar is a Caribbean institution defined by a singular, slightly damp tradition: since there is no dock in White Bay, patrons must swim to shore, arriving with a pocketful of wet currency. Established in the 1970s, this beachside outpost is the undisputed birthplace of the Painkiller, a potent blend of dark rum, pineapple, orange juice, and cream of coconut, topped with fresh Grenadian nutmeg. The atmosphere remains strictly unpretentious, centered around a modest wooden bar, a few hammocks stretched between palm trees, and the turquoise horizon of Jost Van Dyke. While the crowds have grown over the decades, the ritual remains the same—order a drink, pin your soggy bills to the drying line, and settle into the white sand for one of the region’s most iconic sunsets.
