Sandstone Falls.
Sandstone Falls is defined by sheer width rather than vertical drop. Spanning 1,500 feet across the New River, this natural landmark marks the exact point where the river transitions from a wide, calm waterway into a rugged mountain gorge. The water tumbles over a massive sandstone ledge in a series of segmented cascades and drops ranging from 10 to 25 feet, separated by small, forested islands. An ADA-accessible boardwalk and a series of bridges span the river's channels, leading visitors directly to prime viewing platforms over the rushing water. Reaching the falls is half the experience, requiring a scenic drive along the narrow River Road from the historic town of Hinton. Keep an eye out for unique botanical communities that thrive in the surrounding mist-soaked floodplain.
