Pickering House Inn.
Housed in a meticulously restored 1813 landmark, Pickering House Inn avoids the stuffiness often associated with historic New England stays by blending Greek Revival architecture with crisp, modern interiors. Owners Peter and Patty Cooke spent two years gutting the former tavern to create ten distinct guest rooms that prioritize high-end comfort, featuring custom linens and spacious, contemporary bathrooms. The experience is anchored by the culinary program; a gourmet breakfast is served daily in the kitchen, while the adjacent barn-turned-restaurant, Pavilion, offers elevated farm-to-table dining led by Top Chef alum Chris Viaud. Located steps from Lake Winnipesaukee, the inn feels more like a private estate than a hotel, complete with a wraparound porch and fire pits for evening drinks. It is a polished, intentional retreat that manages to feel both storied and brand new.
