Dhayah Fort.
As the only hilltop fort remaining in the United Arab Emirates, Dhayah Fort offers a rare physical link to the region's military past. Perched on a steep rocky outcrop north of Ras Al Khaimah, this early 19th-century mud-brick fortification was the site of a historic 1819 battle against British forces. Reaching the summit requires climbing more than 200 zigzagging stone steps, a hike rewarded with panoramic views that sweep across lush date palm oases, the rugged Hajar Mountains, and the Persian Gulf coastline. The compact, utilitarian ruins are surrounded by an ancient cultural landscape containing archaeological remains that date back millennia. It is a quiet, evocative site where the region's defensive history and dramatic natural geography come together in a single view.
