Goranska Rotonda.
Perched on a hill in the eastern Horiany neighborhood, the Goranska Rotonda is one of Ukraine’s oldest surviving monuments of sacred architecture. Dating back to the 12th or 13th century, this enigmatic church features an original circular core that was expanded with a Gothic nave in the 14th century. The result is a striking, layered structure where the building itself serves as the primary exhibit. Inside, the thick stone walls preserve rare 14th-century frescoes painted in the style of the Italian Proto-Renaissance school of Giotto. Visited alongside Uzhhorod Castle, this quiet hillside site offers a rare, tangible link to the Carpathian region's earliest medieval history, blending Byzantine-era foundations with Gothic design in an uncrowded, contemplative setting.
