Besarabsky Market.
Located at the head of Khreshchatyk, Besarabsky Market is a Kyiv landmark housed in a striking Art Nouveau hall dating back to 1912. The glass-roofed structure, designed by Henryk Gay, remains the city’s most upscale and historic venue for groceries. Inside, the atmosphere is a lively mix of old-world commerce and modern food culture. Stalls are piled high with premium local produce, from cured meats and forest-foraged mushrooms to jars of golden honey and fresh caviar. While the prices are higher than at peripheral neighborhood markets, the quality is exceptional, and the vendors expect a bit of polite haggling. Beyond the raw ingredients, the market has evolved into a culinary hub where traditional Ukrainian dairy and pickles sit alongside contemporary vegan cafes and street food stalls, making it a central meeting point for a quick lunch or a deep dive into local flavors.
