Sviato-Uspinskyi Yeletskyi Monastery.
Founded in the 11th century by Prince Sviatoslav II Yaroslavych, this historic monastery complex is one of Ukraine's oldest, gracefully blending Kyivan Rus-era foundations with later Ukrainian Baroque and Romanesque architecture. At its heart sits the late-11th-century Dormition Cathedral, surrounded by a 36-meter-tall 17th-century gate bell tower—famed as Chernihiv's oldest high-rise structure—along with monastic cells and a refectory. Beyond the surface architecture, visitors can explore the Yeletskyi Caves, a subterranean network of ancient catacombs that reflects the ascetic lifestyle of medieval monks. Having survived Mongol raids, Soviet closures, and World War II damage, the active convent remains a serene monument to nearly a millennium of resilience.
