Katwe Explosion Craters Track.

Traversing the 27-kilometer Katwe Explosion Craters Track offers a raw look at the volatile geological history of the Western Rift Valley. Unlike the conical peaks of traditional volcanoes, these craters were formed by violent steam explosions, leaving behind a series of deep basins now filled with turquoise lakes and lush vegetation. While the route is popular for driving, hiking the track allows for a slower immersion into a landscape where elephants, buffaloes, and hippos often wander from the nearby savanna into the hills. The trek provides a stark contrast between the high-salinity waters of Lake Katwe, where traditional salt mining still takes place, and the sulfurous hot springs of Lake Kitagata. On clear days, the horizon is dominated by the jagged, snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains and the sprawling Kazinga Channel below.
