Traversing the 27-kilometer Katwe Explosion Craters Track offers a raw look at the volatile geological history of the Western Rift Valley. Unlike the conical peaks of traditional volcanoes, these craters were formed by violent steam explosions, leaving behind a series of deep basins now filled with turquoise lakes and lush vegetation. While the route is popular for driving, hiking the track allows for a slower immersion into a landscape where elephants, buffaloes, and hippos often wander from the nearby savanna into the hills. The trek provides a stark contrast between the high-salinity waters of Lake Katwe, where traditional salt mining still takes place, and the sulfurous hot springs of Lake Kitagata.
