Sumela Monastery.

Clinging to a sheer cliff face in the Altındere National Park, the Sumela Monastery is a masterclass in improbable Byzantine engineering. Founded in 386 AD and expanded over centuries, the complex sits 1,200 meters above sea level, appearing almost fused into the rock. The heart of the site is the Rock Church, a cave carved directly into the mountain featuring remarkably preserved frescoes that depict biblical scenes in vivid detail. Beyond the iconography, the site houses a library, monks' quarters, and a "holy spring" that long attracted pilgrims. The journey to the entrance involves a trek through dense pine forests and over stone bridges, offering views of the valley below that are as dramatic as the architecture itself. After extensive restoration, the site now serves as a museum of religious history, balancing its rugged, isolated atmosphere with intricate Ottoman-era masonry.
