Wat Sala Loi.

Founded in 1827 by the revered local heroine Thao Suranari and her husband, Wat Sala Loi breaks away from traditional Thai temple design with its strikingly modern aesthetic. The main chapel is built in the shape of a junk boat sailing toward the heavens, a form symbolizing the vessel that carries Buddhist teachings across the sea of suffering. Encased in local clay tiles from nearby Dan Kwian, the minimalist exterior earned recognition from the Association of Siamese Architects in 1973. Inside, a large white standing Buddha dominates the space, while a statue of Thao Suranari praying in a quiet pond reinforces the temple's deep civic importance. Set along the Lam Takhong riverbank just northeast of the old city moat, it offers a peaceful, leafy alternative to Korat’s busier urban shrines.
