Hammetschwand Elevator.
As Europe’s highest outdoor lift, the Hammetschwand Elevator has been a feat of Swiss engineering since 1905. The ascent begins in a shaft carved into solid rock before the glass cabin bursts onto the cliffside, climbing 153 meters in under a minute. The ride is a visceral experience; travelers are suspended against the vertical face of the Bürgenstock plateau with nothing but air between them and Lake Lucerne. Reaching a peak of 1,132 meters, the summit station offers a 360-degree panorama of the Bernese Alps, Rigi, and Pilatus. To get there, you must first traverse the Felsenweg, a historic cliff-path that winds along the mountain’s edge. Operating seasonally from April to October, the lift remains a tactile piece of Belle Époque history that trades passive sightseeing for a brief, thrilling moment of flight.
