Cathédrale St-Nicolas.
Dominating the skyline of Fribourg’s medieval Old Town, this Gothic masterpiece was constructed over two centuries from local gray-green molasse stone. While the exterior is defined by a massive 74-meter bell tower—accessible via a 365-step climb for views reaching the Bernese Alps—the interior holds a surprising shift in style. It features one of Europe’s most significant collections of Art Nouveau stained glass, designed by Polish artist Józef Mehoffer between 1896 and 1936. Visitors should look for the 15th-century Last Judgment relief above the main portal and the haunting "Dance Macabre" mural inside. The cathedral is also a pilgrimage site for music lovers, housing a famed 1834 Aloys Mooser organ that famously drew composers like Franz Liszt to its pipes.
