Icehotel.
Located in Jukkasjärvi near Kiruna, the world’s original ice hotel is as much an evolving art exhibition as it is a place to sleep. Every winter since 1990, artists gather to hand-carve the temporary structures, suites, and even the drinking glasses from frozen Torne River water, meaning the design completely changes each year before melting back into the river in spring. For those visiting outside of winter, the solar-powered Icehotel 365 keeps a permanent crop of sub-zero ice suites icy and intact all year round. Guests can split their stay between the signature cold rooms—where you sleep in thermal gear on ice beds topped with reindeer hides—and conventional warm rooms, breaking up the sub-zero adventure with Northern Lights excursions, local Arctic dining, and drinks at the famous ice bar.
