MMCA Gwacheon.
Tucked into the greenery of Seoul Grand Park, MMCA Gwacheon offers a sprawling, campus-like alternative to its more compact urban counterparts. Opened in 1986, the building’s design by Kim Tae-soo centers on a spiraling ramp core inspired by traditional Korean beacon mounds, effectively blending local heritage with functional modernism. Inside, eight galleries across two wings house a rigorous collection of modern and contemporary Korean art. The experience extends well beyond the walls; a massive 33,000-square-meter outdoor sculpture park integrates large-scale works directly into the surrounding landscape. With a dedicated children’s museum and family-focused programming, the site functions more like a cultural park than a traditional gallery, rewarding those who make the trip south.
