Table Mountain.
Table Mountain is Cape Town’s defining natural landmark, a sheer sandstone monolith that rises directly above the city bowl. Part of a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site, this flat-topped giant is famous for its hyper-diverse fynbos vegetation and dramatic ocean views. Visitors can ascend to the summit via the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, which features rotating cabins for 360-degree panoramas, or tackle one of the many steep hiking trails like Platteklip Gorge. Once at the top, a network of easy walking paths reveals vistas stretching across Table Bay, Robben Island, and the Atlantic seaboard. Because the mountain famously generates its own microclimate—often rolling in a thick blanket of fog known as the "tablecloth"—it is best to visit on the first clear day.
