Lake Shasta Caverns National Natural Landmark.
Reaching Lake Shasta Caverns is as much about the journey as the destination. Accessible only via guided tour, the experience begins with a catamaran crossing of Shasta Lake followed by a steep bus ascent up the mountain. Inside the limestone cave system, estimated to be 250 million years old, visitors navigate a series of chambers including the Discovery Room and the Cathedral Room. The interior is densely packed with diverse formations, from classic stalactites and columns to more eccentric "cave bacon" and "cave popcorn" deposits. The tour involves climbing roughly 600 stairs across a 200-foot elevation gain, providing a physical perspective on the scale of these subterranean hollows. Back at the surface, the site maintains a casual atmosphere with gemstone sluicing and a picnic area, making it a rugged but accessible fixture of Northern California’s outdoor circuit.
