African Renaissance Monument.
Rising from the summit of the Collines des Mamelles, the African Renaissance Monument is a towering bronze landmark that claims the title of the tallest statue on the continent. Unveiled in 2010 to mark 50 years of Senegalese independence, the 52-meter structure depicts a family—man, woman, and child—stepping toward the Atlantic in a symbolic emergence from the shadows of colonialism. While its North Korean craftsmanship and high construction costs sparked local debate, its scale is undeniably impressive. Visitors can climb the stairs to the base for panoramic views of Dakar or take an internal elevator up into the crown of the male figure. The surrounding grounds frequently host local vendors and cultural events, making the site a central, if complex, pillar of the city’s modern skyline.
