Memorial sites of the Genocide: Nyamata, Murambi, Gisozi and Bisesero.

These four sites constitute a visceral, collective archive of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Each location offers a distinct perspective on the tragedy: Gisozi in Kigali serves as a central place of mourning and education, housing the remains of over 250,000 victims. Nyamata, a former Catholic church, remains frozen in time with its bullet-scarred walls and piles of victims' clothing. At Murambi, the preservation of hundreds of bodies in a former technical school provides a stark, undeniable record of the scale of the massacre. In contrast, Bisesero—the "Hill of Resistance"—honors the bravery of those who fought back against their attackers with traditional weapons. Together, these UNESCO-listed landmarks transition from sites of immense horror to spaces of profound national reflection.
