Engelhardt Astronomical Observatory.
Located in a quiet forest setting west of Kazan, the Engelhardt Astronomical Observatory offers a rare look at a fully preserved, turn-of-the-century scientific campus. Completed in 1901 to escape city light pollution, this UNESCO-listed site functions as both a working research facility and an open-air museum of Russian astronomy. Its Neoclassical buildings and domed pavilions are scattered across a historic park, creating an atmospheric, campus-like setting. Inside, astronomy enthusiasts can view the world’s only still-functioning heliometer telescope, alongside a historic 12-inch refractor built in 1875. A modern planetarium next door bridges the gap between historical science and contemporary space exploration, making the complex a rich destination for science history.
