Brukenthal National Museum.
Housed inside an elegant late 18th-century Baroque palace on Sibiu’s main square, the Brukenthal National Museum is the oldest public museum in Romania, opened in 1817. It originated as the private collection of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal, the Habsburg governor of Transylvania. Wandering through his former residence, you will find an exceptional European Art Gallery featuring works by Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, and Titian, with a strong emphasis on Flemish, Dutch, and Italian masters. Beyond the grand palace and its historic library, the museum has expanded into a city-wide complex. A single name now covers several distinct sites across Sibiu, including museums dedicated to history, contemporary art, and even a historic pharmacy, all tracing the region's rich cultural evolution.
