Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves.
Designed by Pritzker Prize-winner Álvaro Siza Vieira, the Serralves Museum is a masterclass in minimalist Mediterranean modernism. The stark white U-shaped structure is famously integrated into a 44-acre estate, where large windows and internal patios are positioned specifically to pull the surrounding park’s greenery into the galleries. Inside, the layout follows a fluid succession of rooms with varying heights and lighting schemes that accommodate everything from large-scale installations to intimate sketches. The 2024 addition of the Álvaro Siza Wing further expands the footprint, dedicated specifically to the museum’s permanent collection and architectural archives. Beyond the rotating contemporary exhibitions, the site functions as a full cultural campus with a library, a cinema, and a restaurant terrace that offers the best vantage point of the historic grounds.
