Santuario de Nossa Senhora da Peneda.
Tucked into a narrow mountain valley beneath the towering granite cliff of Penedo da Meadinha, the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Peneda is one of the most dramatic pilgrimage sites in northern Portugal. Located deep within the Peneda-Gerês National Park, this 18th-century sanctuary eschews urban grandeur for a design that flows naturally with the rugged terrain. Visitors ascend a monumental staircase—inspired by Braga's Bom Jesus and featuring the "staircase of virtues" and the Yard of the Evangelists—passing a series of historic chapels before reaching the 1875 church. The mountain itself is part of the experience, with spring water channeled beneath the grounds and a winter waterfall cascading down the rock face, making it a spectacular stop for hikers and history buffs alike.
