Basílica de Santa Luzia.

Perched atop Monte de Santa Luzia, this 20th-century basilica is a landmark of neo-Byzantine and Gothic revival design, recognizable by its massive dome and the largest rose windows on the Iberian Peninsula. While the interior is richly decorated, the primary draw is the ascent; a narrow, winding stone staircase leads to the very top of the lantern for an unobstructed 360-degree view of the Lima River, the Atlantic coast, and the red-roofed town below. Reaching the site is part of the experience, via either a steep 660-step climb or a seven-minute ride on the historic funicular, the longest in Portugal. Beyond the church, the hilltop holds the Citânia de Santa Luzia, the excavated ruins of an Iron Age fortified settlement that provides a stark, ancient contrast to the basilica’s monumental scale.
