Convento da Arrábida.
Tucked into the limestone cliffs of the Serra da Arrábida, this 16th-century Franciscan monastery is a masterclass in ascetic architecture. Unlike the grand, gilded cathedrals of urban Portugal, the "Old Convent" is defined by its humility, featuring tiny hillside hermitage cells, white-washed walls, and functional cork doors. The complex spirals up the mountain, connecting small chapels and shrines via steep paths that offer panoramic views of the turquoise Atlantic. Now managed by the Fundação Oriente, the site remains remarkably preserved, showcasing the original refectory, kitchen, and a series of mosaics that survived centuries of isolation. It is a quiet, contemplative place where the human structures feel like a natural extension of the rugged landscape. Access is strictly via pre-booked guided tours.
