Coudelaria de Alter.
Founded in 1748 by King João V, Coudelaria de Alter is the world's oldest stud farm still operating in its original location. Spanning 800 hectares of classic Alentejo countryside, this historic estate is the ancestral home of the Alter Real, a specific lineage of Lusitano horses bred for royalty and classical dressage. Visitors can move beyond the museum and historic stables to see these noble animals in their natural element, particularly during the daily release of the mares. The site functions as both a high-level equestrian center and an immersive cultural destination, offering horseback riding lessons, carriage rides, and "baptisms" for beginners. Between the ancient cork trees and the meticulously preserved stables, the farm maintains a centuries-old breeding tradition that remains central to Portugal’s equestrian identity.
