Pico Ruivo.
Standing as Madeira’s highest point at 1,862 meters, Pico Ruivo offers a dramatic mountain crossing rather than a simple drive-up lookout. With no road access to the summit, reaching the top requires a foot journey through the rugged Central Mountain Massif, whether via the relatively straightforward path from Achada do Teixeira or the demanding ridge hike from Pico do Arieiro. The effort is rewarded with views over the deep valley of Curral das Freiras, the São Jorge valleys, and a sea of clouds that often settles below the peak. The high-altitude landscape is defined by exposed rock formations and resilient heathland, while a renovated shelter just below the summit provides hikers with welcome amenities like restrooms and light meals before they head back down.
