Torre.
Standing at 1,993 meters in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, Torre is the highest point in mainland Portugal. Unlike dramatic, jagged summits, Torre is a broad, wind-swept plateau accessible directly by a paved road. This unique geography allows road-trippers to drive right to the top, passing glacial valleys, polished granite formations, and historic stone villages along the way. For hikers, a challenging 13.7-kilometer trail from Alvoco da Serra climbs over 1,300 meters to the summit. At the top, a stone tower pushes the elevation to an even 2,000 meters, accompanied by a small hub of restaurants, shops selling local woolens and Serra cheese, and mainland Portugal’s only ski resort. It is a singular high-altitude destination where rugged geology meets easy alpine access.
