Museu Municipal de Mértola.
The Museu Municipal de Mértola is not a single building, but a decentralized network of fourteen distinct sites woven directly into the town's fabric. Known as a "museum town," this archaeological project transforms Mértola into a living archive of Mediterranean history. The Islamic collection is the most significant in Portugal, featuring 9th-century ceramics and intricate funeral steles housed in a repurposed 18th-century residence. Nearby, the Roman museum is built directly over an excavated villa within the Town Hall, displaying mosaics and structural ruins where they were originally discovered. Visitors can also explore a 6th-century paleo-Christian baptistery and a massive Roman cryptoporticus. It is a rare setup where the modern town exists literally on top of its predecessors, allowing you to walk through centuries of Moorish, Roman, and Christian heritage in a single afternoon.
