Auschwitz II-Birkenau serves as the primary site of the Nazi state’s industrial-scale genocide. While the nearby Auschwitz I contains the museum’s main exhibitions, Birkenau remains largely as it was found at the end of the war: a sprawling, 470-acre expanse of wooden barracks, electrified fences, and the haunting ruins of four crematoria and gas chambers. The scale of the site is its most overwhelming feature, centered on the railway tracks and the "Death Gate" where arrivals underwent selection. Visitors walk the perimeter of the camp, past the international monument and the ashes of the victims, to understand the sheer logistics of the Holocaust. It is a stark, silent space that focuses on the physical environment of the camp rather than traditional museum displays, preserving the ruins as a permanent warning and a burial ground for over a million people.
