The Bat Cave.
The Monfort Bat Sanctuary on Samal Island is home to the world’s largest single colony of Geoffroy’s rousette fruit bats, housing an estimated 2.3 million of them. Rather than a traditional spelunking tour, the experience here is strictly observational to protect the delicate ecosystem. Visitors peer into the cave from five outdoor viewing decks, looking down at walls and ceilings entirely blanketed by a squirming, chattering mass of bats. The real draw comes at dusk, when the colony awakens for its nightly feeding run, creating a dramatic, swirling cloud as millions of bats pour out of the cave openings into the evening sky. It is a raw, sensory-heavy wildlife spectacle that prioritizes conservation over tourist fluff.
