Stretching across a barrier island on Jupiter Island, Blowing Rocks Preserve feels more like a rugged coastline in Maine than a typical Florida beach. It is defined by a massive outcropping of Anastasia limestone—the largest on the state’s Atlantic coast—which creates a dramatic, craggy shoreline. During high tide or heavy swells, seawater is forced through erosional holes in the rock, sending plumes of spray up to 50 feet into the air. Beyond the geysers, the preserve acts as a vital sanctuary for gopher tortoises and nesting sea turtles. Visitors can transition from the salt spray of the oceanfront to the quiet of mangrove wetlands and hardwood hammocks via a network of short trails.
