Mutrah Souq.
Mutrah Souq is the atmospheric heart of Muscat’s historic port district, a labyrinthine bazaar that feels worlds away from the city's modern malls. Situated along the Corniche, the market is defined by its timber-roofed alleyways where the heavy scent of burning frankincense and sandalwood lingers in the air. The layout is famously confusing, encouraging aimless exploration past stalls packed with Omani silver daggers (khanjars), pashminas, and elaborate gold bridal jewelry. While you’ll find plenty of typical souvenirs, the souq remains a functional local hub for spices, vibrant textiles, and household goods. It is best visited in the early evening when the sea breeze picks up and the interplay of light and shadow highlights the intricate lattice ceilings. Bargaining is expected, though the interactions with long-standing vendors remain largely low-pressure and polite.
