Al Hamooda Fort.
Tucked away in the coastal district of Ayjah, Castle Al Hamooda Fort offers a glimpse into Sur’s storied seafaring past. Built by the Al Ya’aruba dynasty, this compact fortification was designed for maritime surveillance rather than grand inland defense, protecting a wealthy port once famous for its hand-built wooden dhows. Its imposing walls stand near the water, guarding the approach from the Gulf of Oman alongside watchtowers and the nearby Ayjah Lighthouse. A visit here is less about exploring sprawling palace chambers and more about understanding the practicalities of defending a historic trading hub. It is best enjoyed as a quick, atmospheric stop on a waterfront walk, offering excellent views of the bay and the old town's traditional boatbuilding quarters.
