Struve Geodetic Arc.

The Struve Geodetic Arc is a UNESCO World Heritage site that represents a pioneering scientific survey conducted from 1816 to 1852 by Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve. Stretching over 2,820 kilometers from Hammerfest, Norway, to the Black Sea and covering ten countries, this arc is the first large-scale attempt to accurately measure the Earth's size and shape. It utilized a triangulation method to provide critical geodetic data, which remained a standard for over a century. Recognized for its significance in earth sciences and international cooperation, the arc comprises 258 triangles, with 34 remaining marked by various monuments. The segment near Hammerfest is particularly notable, featuring an obelisk that highlights its historical importance amidst stunning natural scenery.
