Hundertwasser Art Centre.
Defying the monotony of straight lines, the Hundertwasser Art Centre is a posthumous realization of Friedensreich Hundertwasser's final architectural sketches. The building is a whimsical feat of ecological design, constructed from 40,000 recycled bricks and topped with a forested rooftop garden and a shimmering gold cupola. Inside, the galleries house the largest collection of Hundertwasser’s vibrant, fluid artworks outside of Vienna. Crucially, the site also hosts the Wairau Māori Art Gallery—the country’s first dedicated contemporary Māori art space. Visitors can climb to the roof for views over the Hātea River, browse the museum shop, or stop by the Aqua Café. It is less a traditional museum and more a living monument to the artist’s philosophy of living in harmony with nature.
