Dominating Zwolle’s central market square, the 15th-century Grote Kerk—officially the Great or Sint Michaels Church—is a striking monument where medieval history meets active civic life. While its towering spire famously collapsed during a 1682 storm, the remaining Gothic structure is packed with treasures. Inside, the visual highlights are the magnificent 1721 Schnitger organ, a carved 1622 pulpit, and an ornate 1597 choir screen. Rather than existing as a static museum, the building operates as the Academiehuis Grote Kerk. This means the historic nave regularly transforms into a lively cultural hub hosting concerts, exhibitions, and public debates.
