The Ruined Garden.
Hidden behind a nondescript door in the Fes medina, this lush oasis occupies the skeletal remains of a merchant’s mansion that once served as a neighborhood rubbish dump. Today, it is a verdant courtyard where tortoises roam between mismatched chairs and colorful wax-print tablecloths. The kitchen avoids typical tourist clichés, focusing instead on authentic Fassi flavors and elevated street food. Highlights include foraged greens like berkoula, saffron-heavy Sephardic chicken, and the house specialty, mechoui—a spit-roasted lamb that requires twenty-four hours' notice. Beyond the tagines, the menu features playful touches like potato fritter "popcorn" and spiced chicken livers. It is a rare spot in the old city that feels genuinely unhurried, offering a cooling, botanical escape from the sensory intensity of the surrounding souks.
