Ostrog Monastery.
Defying gravity and architectural norms, Ostrog Monastery is wedged into a near-vertical cliff face 900 meters above the Bjelopavlići plain. This 17th-century Orthodox site is Montenegro's most significant pilgrimage destination, centered around the cave-bound Upper Church where the relics of Saint Basil are interred. The whitewashed facade looks as though it was grown directly from the rock of Ostroška Greda, housing cramped, atmospheric chapels adorned with 17th-century frescoes that follow the uneven contours of the stone. While much of the complex was restored in the 1920s following a fire, the site retains a profound, quiet intensity. Visitors typically hike the steep path from the Lower Church, rewarded by panoramic valley views and a glimpse into a living spiritual tradition that draws over a hundred thousand people of various faiths every year.
