Papaloa Cemetery.
Situated on the wind-swept northern shore of Molokaʻi's Kalaupapa Peninsula, Papaloa Cemetery is a deeply moving historical site that reflects the diverse, bittersweet history of the former Hansen's disease isolation settlement. As the area's principal burial ground, this active cemetery contains around 1,000 graves organized into 12 distinct sections by religious and cultural affiliations, including Catholic, Protestant, LDS, Chinese, Japanese, and Hawaiian areas. Headstones feature inscriptions in multiple languages, offering a direct record of the community’s multicultural past. Visitors will find a poignant mix of historic 19th-century markers and modern graves adorned with fresh lei, illustrating a living lineage of remembrance that persists despite past tsunamis and isolation.
