Hacienda San Angel.
Hacienda San Angel is a collection of colonial-style villas perched on a hilltop above Puerto Vallarta’s historic center. The property’s romantic lineage is anchored by the villa Richard Burton famously bought for his wife, Susan, in the 1970s. Today, the adults-only estate consists of 20 suites filled with 18th- and 19th-century Mexican and European antiques, religious art, and hand-carved furniture. Winding cobblestone paths lead through lush gardens and courtyards punctuated by trickling fountains and three separate swimming pools. The atmosphere is sophisticated and secluded, culminating at the rooftop restaurant where nightly mariachi performances accompany views of the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s crown and the Banderas Bay. It is a rare, museum-like retreat that prioritizes old-world privacy over modern minimalism.
