Black River Gorges National Park.
As the island’s largest protected forest, Black River Gorges National Park preserves a lush, rugged wilderness in the hilly southwest of Mauritius. Spanning over 67 square kilometers, this sanctuary is the last major stronghold for the island's native rainforest, making it a critical refuge for rare endemic wildlife like the Mauritian flying fox, pink pigeon, and Mauritius kestrel. Inside, outdoor enthusiasts will find around 60 kilometers of marked hiking trails that wind through deep valleys and dramatic river gorges. Routes lead to spectacular vantage points like Alexandra Falls and Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, the island’s highest peak at 821 meters. Accessible and undeveloped, it offers a stark, green contrast to the coast and pairs perfectly with a visit to the nearby Chamarel.
