Marseille’s story begins at the Vieux-Port, a natural harbor where ancient Massalia was founded around 600 BC. Today, this historic basin functions as both a lively marina and the city’s primary civic square, thanks to a major pedestrianization project designed by Foster + Partners. The redesign cleared the quayside of heavy traffic, leaving room for the striking *ombrière*—a massive, mirror-polished canopy—and a daily fish market where local fishermen still sell their morning catch. Framed by Fort Saint-Jean and Fort Saint-Nicolas, the waterfront is lined with cafes and restaurants where Marseille’s famous bouillabaisse originated. It remains the ultimate starting point for any visit, serving as the departure hub for ferries to the Frioul islands and boat trips to the dramatic Calanques.
