Kelah Fish Sanctuary Complex.
Deep within the Tasik Kenyir rainforest along the Sungai Petang, this dedicated conservation sanctuary offers a rare, hands-on encounter with Malaysia’s prized *ikan kelah* (mahseer). Established to protect the dwindling species, the sanctuary bans all fishing, resulting in remarkably tame fish that gather in clear, shallow waters. Visitors can wade directly into the river, where schools of kelah will crowd around and gently nibble at their feet, especially if coaxed with fish pellets purchased from the rangers. Reaching the site is part of the adventure, requiring a boat ride from Pengkalan Gawi jetty followed by a scenic hike over suspension bridges and shaded jungle trails. Note that the sanctuary operates seasonally, closing from November to February during the monsoon.
