In "The Storm We Made" by Vanessa Chan, set in 1945 British-colonial Malaysia, Cecily Alcantara's family is in grave danger due to her past as a spy for the Japanese forces. Her son Abel has vanished, and her daughter Jasmin is hidden to avoid being forced into service.
