Bat Exodus.
Deep within the ancient rainforest of Gunung Mulu National Park, the nightly bat exodus at Deer Cave is one of Borneo’s most spectacular natural dramas. Every evening between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM, assuming the weather holds, a colossal colony of two to three million bats—primarily wrinkle-lipped bats—pours out of the cave's massive mouth to forage. Instead of a chaotic scramble, the mammals form mesmerizing, swirling black ribbons that twist across the sky like smoke. Reaching the purpose-built viewing observatory requires a scenic 3.8-kilometer walk along a raised wooden plankway through peat swamps and limestone outcrops. It is a raw, unstaged display of biodiversity, where the sheer scale of the flight offers a powerful reminder of the park's thriving, delicate ecosystem.
