Avenue of the Baobabs.

This striking 260-meter corridor along unpaved Road No. 8, located between Morondava and Belon’i Tsiribihina in western Madagascar, is one of the island's most iconic landscapes. Here, a dramatic row of ancient Grandidier’s baobabs—some rising 30 meters high and dating back hundreds of years—towers over the surrounding red dirt road and agricultural flats. These legacy giants are the surviving remnants of a dense tropical forest cleared long ago for farming. Now designated as a protected natural monument, the avenue is entirely free to visit and best experienced at sunrise or sunset, when the low-slung light casts colossal, otherworldly silhouettes against the sky. It is a raw, photogenic, and vulnerable encounter with Madagascar’s unique biodiversity.
