Kamenoi Besso.
Established in 1921 as a private villa for visiting VIPs, Kamenoi Besso remains one of Yufuin’s most storied retreats. Set within nearly ten acres of forest at the base of Mount Yufu, the property manages to feel secluded despite its proximity to the mist-shrouded Lake Kinrin. Architecture is the draw here: traditional thatched roofs and woodwork have been meticulously updated by Schri Kakinuma to blend classic ryokan aesthetics with mid-century Danish furniture and Western comforts. Guest rooms are split between the historic main house and private villas tucked into the woods, most featuring their own hot spring baths. Public spaces, including a renowned tea room and a moodily lit bar, showcase local crafts alongside modern design. It is a quiet, highly curated sanctuary where the high-volume volcanic springs of the region meet a sophisticated, understated sense of luxury.
