Grand Shrines of Ise.
Widely considered the spiritual heart of Japan, the Grand Shrines of Ise comprise a sprawling complex of over 125 Shinto sanctuaries centered around the Inner Shrine (Naikū) and the Outer Shrine (Gekū). Dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu and the deity of agriculture Toyouke, the site is defined by its commitment to the Shinto cycle of death and renewal. Every 20 years, the main structures are completely rebuilt using ancient carpentry techniques in a ritual known as Shikinen Sengu. This ensures the structures remain perpetually new yet thousands of years old. Set within a massive ancient forest, the primary shrines are partially obscured by tall wooden fences, maintaining an air of profound seclusion. Visitors cross the Ujibashi Bridge to enter a space where the simple, unpainted cypress architecture and gravel paths evoke a sense of timelessness.
