SHIGUCHI.
Shiguchi is a radical departure from the standard Niseko resort, designed by Shouya Grigg as a sprawling sanctuary of art and heritage. Set on a private mountain ridge, the property comprises five centuries-old *kominka*—traditional farmhouses—that were painstakingly relocated and restored to blend rural character with modern minimalism. These villas are immense, some exceeding 200 square meters, and feature private onsen baths, wood-burning fireplaces, and floor-to-ceiling views of Mt. Yotei. Inside, the aesthetic is that of a living gallery, mixing Grigg’s private collection of ceramics and ink paintings with contemporary sculpture. Dining takes place at SOMOZA, a gallery-restaurant serving foraged Hokkaido ingredients in a space anchored by a steel tea room. It is a quiet, immersive retreat where the architecture is as much a draw as the surrounding forest.
