Castello Brown.

Perched high above Portofino’s iconic harbor, Castello Brown seamlessly blends military grit with the romance of a 19th-century English estate. Originally a Roman lookout and later a Genoese fortress, the castle underwent a dramatic transformation when Montague Yeats Brown, a British consul, purchased it in 1867 and converted it into a private villa. Today, operated by the municipality, it feels less like a dusty museum and more like a lively cultural hub, hosting art exhibitions and events. The main draw is the sub-tropical Mediterranean garden and the legendary terrace, which offers the most famous panoramic views over the Gulf of Tigullio. Literature buffs will also recognize the estate as the inspiration and setting for Elizabeth von Arnim’s 1922 novel, *The Enchanted April*.
